Scarborough named UK Enterprise Capital 2008
From the Financial Times:
Scarborough has been named UK Enterprise Capital 2008 for regeneration that included turning a museum full of stuffed seabirds into studio space for creative businesses. The award is handed out yearly by the government, based on the recommendation of independent judges, to a town or city that has made striking progress in reviving a sickly local economy.
Evening News plays it cool with scoop
The Independent has a short item on Scarborough Evening News managing a national (or international) scoop, but playing it very cool:
A meeting with Charles Bean, the Deputy Governor of the Bank of England, provided the Scarborough Evening News business reporter Laura Crothers with an unexpected scoop yesterday.
A whingeing Kiwi at Scarborough
Just come across real crap travel article on Scarborough, in a New Zealand paper. By someone who had meal in and stayed at Grand Hotel, and - though all the way from NZ - evidently didn't make it further from there than the Spa. "Travel" writing without travelling; just woeful. No castle, no North Bay, no town centre; perhaps the poor oaf is unable to get about. More likely, just lazy, and having a bad, bad hair day.Includes:
Scarborough beach cricket tournament in January
I was startled to just come across google news item re beach cricket tournament being held in Scarborough just now. Even with global warming, surely North or South Bay way too chill for cricket, esp with stars playing. Turns out, though, it's in Scarborough, Australia:
"A capacity crowd of 7000 cricket fans flocked to the Scarborough
beachfront this weekend to see some of the legends of world cricket
duke it out in a tri-nations beach cricket series.
A tale of two Scarboroughs on Facebook
Checking Facebook for groups on Scarborough, soon find one that's titled "You know you're from Scarborough when" and goes on to include guff like:
Alan Ayckbourn in Scarborough - Not bad
From the bow window of his drawing-room, more a belvedere of
curved glass, Sir Alan Ayckbourn can contemplate the North Sea.
It's the reason he moved his bed here, while convalescing after
his stroke last year. Well, not his bed - a hydraulic one on loan
from the hospital. The playwright adopts a comedy Yorkshire accent
What a relief as Sweet Pee committee wins Scalby potty protest
Ee, you have to laugh don't you - though not so funny if you've been waiting a couple of years for your local toilet to reopen. A tale of persistent potty waving pensioners and friends, in the elegantly named Sweet Pee committee, on BBC news website - almost the stuff of Alan Ayckbourn plays.
Includes:
"Residents have won their fight to get a public toilet reopened in a North Yorkshire village.
Scarborough the third most quintissentially British seaside resort
From Teletext Holidays:
"
British seaside resorts have traditionally had a bad rap; stereotyped as drab, dirty and ‘past their best’ - now that’s all changed. With an increase in Brits holidaying in the UK, resorts are improving their acts and are quickly becoming the places to be seen.
Now Southwold, the pretty historical town in Suffolk has beaten off a host of competition to be crowned the most quintessential British seaside resort in a new poll released today.
Scarborough the nation's best beach donkey resort
I rather reckon Scarborough folk were surprised by this accolade:
"A North Yorkshire seaside town has been named the best beach donkey resort in the country by welfare experts.
Judges from the Donkey Sanctuary declared Scarborough the best donkey resort in its annual awards which recognise high standards of welfare.
...
The Maggots and the Maternity Unit
Even though they say no publicity is bad publicity, gotta wonder about Scarborough making the news this way:
"Managers have apologised after maggots from a dead seagull fell through the ceiling of the maternity unit at Scarborough Hospital.
Medical director Dr Ian Holland said the bird had died on the roof, which was not an area covered by regular maintenance checks."
